The Roslindale neighborhood was originally part of the Roxbury township and referred to as "South Street Crossing" until 1870, when the US Postal service built an office and designated it as Roslindale.  The orgin of the name has a couple of different stories.  The most popular is that got its name from an early inhabitant from Roslyn, Scotland, whose house on Florence Street greeted visitors with a sign that said "Roslyn Cottage".   

Roslindale borders the other Boston neighborhoods of Jamaica Plain, Hyde Park, Mattapan, and West Roxbury.  Its major throughways are Washington Street, Hyde Park Avenue and Centre Street.  It's serviced by the Needham MBTA Commuter Line and several buses.  

Roslindale's center is commonly known as Roslindale Village (or Rozzie Square by some of the more 'old school locals') and has seen, in recent years, an urban renewal with the inclusion of some wonderful restaurants, a farmer's market, many community oriented parades and events. Roslindale also shares two of the city's biggest greenland reserves:  The Arnold Arboretem and Stonybrook Reservation.
