Famously known by locals as "Southie" , many writers and filmmakers have characterized this once solely working class neighborhood as the battle ground to Boston's often unglamorous racial, political and criminal history.  The infamous bussing riots of 1974 began there.  Boston's near-mythical Bulger family hails from its streets as well. 

But the future is bright for 'ole Southie:  

Its residential Real Estate, especially the condo and multi-family market, has consistently been one of the top selling real estate markets in Boston. Two big reasons are pretty clear:  Its proximity to downtown (a short 10-20 minute walk in most cases) and its beachfront and seaport access.  The Old Harbor and Carson's Beach along with Castle Island are picturesque spots where folks can easily and quickly escape from the boiling point pressures that working downtown often brings.  

Also, it's just a tunnel (or ferry) away from Logan Airport and access to both major highway arteries (Mass Turnpike and Route 93) are just around the corner.  Much of Southie's housing stock are triple-decker three family condominiums, although in recent years, a great amount of development along it's Western-most border (Dorchester Ave and Old Colony) has brought some of the city's most impressive and state-of-the-art residential development.
