Charlestown (Boston)

 

A peninsula that rests at the entrance to Charles River in the northwest corner of the city, Charlestown's historic relevance to Boston's and the nation's history is substantial.  It's home port to the USS Constitution, and, perhaps most famously, it is the site of the revolutionary Battle of Bunker Hill (which was actually fought on nearby Breeds Hill).  

In modern history, its connection to bank robbers and its impenetrable "code of silence" has been immortalized in Hollywood movies such as "Monument Ave"--which I highly recommend--and more recently, "The Town".  Putting history and Hollywood aside, Charlestown is also one Boston's most desirable neighborhoods.  Its architectural charm and its proximity to the North End (and downtown) are big draws for folks moving into Boston.

There are really two distinct parts of Charlestown:  The main part of Charlestown and the Charlestown Navy Yard, which has largely been developed by the BRA and consists of residential housing, commercial and academic space, a park and some of the remnants of the original U.S. Navy Yard.  There are several smaller sections of Charlestown that deserve exploring--Mt. Vernon Street and Winthrop Square are two of my favorite enclaves in the area.  

Serviced primarily by the Orange Line (with stops at Bunker Hill Community College and Sullivan Square), North Station Commuter Rail depot is only a short walk from much of the neighborhood.  Access to Routes 93, 99, and 1 is simple (93 is a bit more convoluted, but nonetheless close by).  

The Real Estate market in Charlestown runs the gamut from $100/sqft to $600+/sqft, so there is a variety of property to choose from.
