Chinatown & the Leather District
Two neighborhoods that are very closely related. Between the two of them, they cover less than two square miles. And because of the geographic restriction of the Chanel, the Turnpike and the South Station right-of-way, the Leather District really shares most of its neighborly border with Chinatown.
Chinatown's allure begins with its array of foods. With more than 2 dozen restaurants, Chinatown is one of the few places in Boston where one can eat something delicious 24-7.
The Leather District gets its name because the buildings that comprise its two verical (North to South) and three horizontal blocks were primarily used to store and refrigerate hydes and pelts brought in for tanning and textiles. With immediate access to South Station, I93 N/S, I90, the Orange Line (at Chinatown or New England Medical), Boston's waterfront, Kennedy Greenway, Dewey Square and Downtown Crossing, the Leather District might seem like the center of the universe.
