Architechturally, it is defined by classic red brick or brownstone rowhouses that line its streets.  

Socially, it's defined by it's very competive restaurant scene.

The South End has always been a melting pot of race, culture and economic class.  Since its revitalization began in the 1970s and 1980s, the South End has come to be known to foodies as the destination point for dining out in Boston.  And most recently, the newly ordained SOWA (South of Washington Street) and Gaslight Districts are providing even more delicious reasons to make way to the South End.

Through the recent market downturn that began in 2005, the South End has seen little depreciation in its residential Real Estate market.  While there are still a number of multi-unit buildings and very few single family townhouses, the condominium market dominates the South End's Real Estate activity.

Defined by the Mass Pike underpass, Albany Street, Huntington Ave, Stuart Street and beyond Massachusetts Avenue (that's "Mass Ave" to us locals), the South End is serviced by the Massachusetts Avenue and Back Bay Subway station stops.
