West Roxbury Real Estate
West Roxbury, not unlike Hyde Park, is one of Boston's most 'suburban' neighborhoods. With a predominance of single family homes, it was largely Boston's most prominent Irish-American enclaves and home to many of the city's Policemen and firemen. And not unlike any other part of this historic region, it too has some interesting tales of its orgins. This exerpt is taken from the Boston Foundation's website:
This neighborhood was founded in 1630—the same year that Boston itself was founded—but at that time it was made up primarily of farm land. West Roxbury was part of Roxbury until it seceded from that neighborhood in 1851—and then was annexed by Boston in 1874. One of the most fascinating stories in West Roxbury history is the fact this neighborhood was home to Brook Farm, the utopian experiment in communal living that was started in 1841, and inspired by the Transcendentalism movement. Indeed, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry David Thoreau all frequented the farm, which was driven by the idea of shared work and shared leisure. All members of the farm were paid equally, including women, a highly unusual arrangement for the era. The experiment only lasted for six or seven years, but its ideas and ideals have inspired a number of similar experiments over the years.
For many folks who wish to live or be near to downtown Boston who also seek the sleepy, small town tranquility associated with suburban life, West Roxbury is a favorite choice. More single families are sold in West Roxbury than any other neighborhood in Boston.
